Nurofen Plus Warning – All UK Stock Recalled

Nurofen Plus, a drug containing ibuprofen and codeine and made by Reckitt Benckiser (UK) Ltd, is being recalled due to possible sabotage in some packets.

The first alert was raised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on the discovery that 3 packets of Nurofen Plus contained an antipsychotic drug (Seroquel XL 50mg) instead of the ibuprofen and codeine tablets.

Reckitt Benckiser have stated that all packets of Nurofen Plus should be returned to a pharmacy immediately.

Known Affected Batches of Ibuprofen Plus

You should send back all packages, but these are the current ones known to have the wrong drugs in:

  • Batch 13JJ – Expiry date 03/2014. Product licence no – 00327 / 0082. First distributed – 30 April 2011
  • Batch 57JJ – Expiry date – 05/2014. Product licence no – 00063 / 0376. First distributed – 21 June 2011
  • Batch 49JJ – Expiry date – 05/2014. Product licence no – 00063 / 0376. First distributed – 1 July 2011

Side Effects of Seroquel

Generally taking Seroquel will just result in sleepiness but there are other more serious side effects. If you have taken Nurofen Plus recently and had any unusual side effects then you should consult your doctor.

Most common side effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • High triglycerides (determined by a blood test)
  • Headaches
  • Agitation
  • Constipation

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Increased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Nasal congestion
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Back pain
  • Shakiness (tremor)
  • Irritability
  • Joint pain
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Irritated or runny nose
  • Vision problems

More Serious Side Effects

Some of these will only result from longer term usage of the drug so are not likely to develop after a few tablets.

  • Diabetes symptoms – high blood glucose, thirsty, more urine, hunger
  • Rapid increase in weight
  • Feeling suicidal
  • Dizziness or fainting when standing up
  • Internal restless or jitteriness
  • Abnormal muscle movements, spasms (know to become permanent if Seroquel is not stopped immediately)
  • Confusion
  • Sweating
  • Irregular or increase heart rate
  • Rashes
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Breathing problems
There are many issues related to the drug so if you have had any of the above symptoms, or any other unusual symptoms after taking Ibuprofen Plus please seek medical advice immediately and take all remaining drugs to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.
