Indented soft scars can be elevated using a number of different substances that can be injected into the skin, such as collagen, hyaluronic acid or fat. The quantity injected into the skin will depend on the size and firmness of the scar.
An injection of collagen can improve the appearance of the scar straight after application, but it does not have a permanent effect and will need to be replaced. The collagen used can be human or bovine. Hyaluronic acid injection has a slightly longer lasting effect compared to collagen injection. A full-thickness deep depressed scar can be elevated with the injection of the patients’ own fat or donated fascia (fibrous tissue and fat that connects the skin to the underlying tissue underneath).
